Need to optimize The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim for PC
I didn't buy Skyrim for the PC just to play some awful console port. The graphics are poor even by console standards, fps drops in places where they shouldn't be, menu's made for controllers, immense numbers of bugs, a very dated engine, the list could just go on. I love the game, but I refuse to settle for this kind of thing. There is really no excuse for this, you cannot push out a game and just hope the modders take care of the rest. It really disheartens me. Like I said, I do enjoy the game and this isn't a complete bash to Bethesda, but I sure did expect a lot better than this.

I wouldn't know anything about that; I gave up on Bethesda games with Oblivion nor do I pay attention to gaming publications. Skyrim just happens to be their first game in years that has truly impressed me.

Everyone brings up the Minecraft argument, yet it has no real bearing in this conversation. They made it look like that on purpose and it suits that play style, a goofy little adventure thing made in java. Skyrim was made to have immersion and depth, which is hard to accomplish when everything looks dated and there is basically no real attempt to make the PC version streamlined.

Graphics are one of the most important elements of Minecraft and its tone, just because they are not complex or realistic it doesn't mean they are not good graphics. As long as they work together with rest of the elements of the game they will be good graphics. Putting that aside it's not always you can pull off something like the graphics in Minecraft (Or Lego's Star Wars or Limbo). Remember, many movies will draw people on based on their amazing locales, great cinematography or even special effects. It's no different with games, not at all.

Totally agree. Oblivion with Darnified UI was so seamless and elegant I actually forgot that it *wasn't* the default interface until I saw my friend play it on the 360 and I nearly vomited at the atrociousness of it. Skyrim's menu is certainly odd and wonky at times, but at least it's relatively concise and easy to read. Mods will improve it soon enough.

I have had little to no issues with this game. Yes I do have a pretty ripping pc and run it all maxed out for the most part ,60 fps outdoors everywhere, 40-60 in cities (but generally 50-60),i have v sync on, could get much more with it off as i have tried it that way too and this games graphics wedge? I have to say I think not, this game is damn beautiful. which games are you playing that are "so much better than skyrim’s" i want to know because i have played it all, some come close or are just different (witcher 2 comes to mind), but hardly any games i can think of are "that much better", and don’t say BF3 or some fps that has enclosed levels and 5 hour campaigns, the scope, ambition and magnitude of this game is enormous.

I think what he means is that the mouse is very slow. And if you try to use the mouse it might click something you don't want. Like if I go into a dialogue, what I selected with WASD by scrolling is usually in large text and bold. But if I decide to use my mouse to select a response, the text isn't enlarged or bolded. It might be a little highlighted but I am usually misleaded by the fact that another response is in large text. And if this was patched in 1.1 then they need to check again because my copy is legitimate and I downloaded it straight from Steam.

I play this game on a machine I built two years ago, on ultra, at 1920x1200. I have no performance issues whatsoever. In fact the average frame rate, while probably a little bit lower than Oblivion, is very consistent compared to its predecessor, which will still shutter occasionally on the same rig. It also crashes less. This is all breaking new ground for a TES game, which typically does not run well on contemporary hardware at release and crash all the time.

How hard is it to drag in even FIVE people off the street to playtest a damn blockbuster game for 5 hours. That is all it would have taken to rid the game of inexcusable problems like the sound crashing, the unmapped item rotation, the awful menu navigation, etc. It is completely unacceptable that Bethesda allowed this game to hit shelves with such amateur interface errors. I can see already that all of us who love The Elder Scrolls series will have to rely on the unpaid modders, not the console-profit-groveling Bethesda outfit, to salvage another episode of "their" saga.

You gaming elitists can take your aesthetics uber alles and shove it. Graphics contribute to aesthetics and aesthetics contribute to graphics. Just because you saw a clever animation about graphics vs aesthetics once doesn't mean it is therefore The Gospel of the Gaming World you must expound that aesthetics > graphics every time someone mentions graphics.
